A protest in Albuquerque, New Mexico took a violent turn when shots were fired Steven Baca Junior after being attacked by a group of Antifa members.
On June 16, 2020, people began protesting the removal of a Juan de Oñate statue in Old Town. However, protesters began to remove the statue, by tying to a chain to it in hopes to pull it off its stand. Cell phone video then shows Baca pulling a woman to the ground, resulting in the protesters attacking him. Baca was in the face with a skateboard by a protester, with the group then following him down the street. Baca is attacked a second time by a group of multiple people, being hit with the same skateboard and being threatened by an Antifa member with what appears to be a knife. Baca opens fire, hitting the Antifa member in the torso. Baca was arrested upon the arrival of police, and is currently has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. However, the Albuquerque Police Department has stated that most if not all charges are likely to be dropped following the release of the footage, with some believing Baca was acting in self defense.
