Intelligence official William Evanina made a statement today about foreign interference in the 2020 U.S. election. In 2016, Russia had been discovered to have been interfering in the US election. A report from the Justice Department stated, "The Russian government interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion. Evidence of Russian government operations began to surface in mid-2016. In June, the Democratic National Committee and its cyber response team publicly announced that Russian hackers had compromised its computer network. Releases of hacked materials—hacks that public reporting soon attributed to the Russian government—began that same month." Similarly in 2020, Russia was said to have been, "using a range of measures" to undermine Biden's candidacy.

Unlike 2016, China and Iran are now working to interfere in the election in order to prevent Trump from being reelected, with China describing president Trump as, "unpredictable."

Evenina gave Republican Party officials a briefing about a potential interference in the 2020 election while indicating other countries may be seeking to influence the election.
