Fact Check: Was Velma from Scooby-Doo confirmed to be gay?
Status: Mostly False
What's True: James Gunn, a writer for the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, tried to portray Velma as a lesbian. In addition, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone claimed that Velma was lesbian in his incarceration of the Scooby-Doo franchise.
What's False: As described by Gunn, "studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous". In addition, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed featured Velma's boyfriend Patrick Wisely, who was played by actor Seth Green.
The Truth:
Recently, rumors concerning Scooby-Doo's Velma have circulated stating that she is a lesbian. The rumors come in the wake of Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone creating an Instagram post confirming Velma was lesbian in that series. However, the idea that Velma was confirmed to be lesbian in all Scooby-Doo series is false. The rumor gained traction after articles — such as one published by IGN — stated that Velma was confirmed to be gay, many of which neglect to mention in their titles that this is only confirmed to be true in the Mystery Incorporated series.
The only other relations to Velma being gay reside in the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, in which writer James Gunn tried to make her openly gay, before the network slowly faded out any instances in the film that would make her sexuality apparent. James Gunn returned as a writer for the sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters unleashed, in which she was given a boyfriend by the name of Patrick Wisely, who was played by actor Seth Green. Gunn stated, "In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script" (for 2002's live-action "Scooby-Doo'), he wrote. "But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."
