Fact Check: Did Nickelodeon confirm Spongebob is part of the LGBTQ Community?
Status: Mostly False
The Truth:
On June 13th, 2020, Nickelodeon's official twitter page endorsed pride month by posting some fan art of some of their properties with a rainbow color scheme, one of which being Spongebob Squarepants. However, Nickelodeon never confirmed that Spongebob was a part of the LGBTQ community within the tweet itself or anywhere else. Rather, Nickelodeon posted fan art made by twitter user Ramzy Masri, who made pride month fan art of three Nickelodeon characters, one of which happened to be Spongebob.
People were quick to make the assumption that Spongebob is gay as a result of the tweet. In addition, another character featured in the tweet, Korra from the Legend of Korra, had her own pride month fan art and was confirmed to be a part of the LGBTQ community in the series finale.
The only evidence to suggest Spongebob might be a part of the LGBTQ community comes from a 2005 interview with series creator Stephen Hillenburg. Two Christian activist groups accused Spongebob of trying to promote the acceptance of homosexuality, Stephen Hillenburg said, "We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show." The key word being "almost", suggesting that Hillenburg never gave Spongebob his own sexuality.
